34. Delivery Performance Assessment (through obssessive data collection)
Monday, 04 Mar 2019
We've been using DHL eCommerce as our courier since November 2017 and have obsessively collected data to see how they performed.

The chart below shows their performance for the parcels sent to the US from November 2017 to October 2018.

We advertise delivery by them takes about 2~3 weeks, and for most of the year it took about 20 days, as advertised. But for the parcels sent from December to January (the red-colored area) their performance nose-dived.

Below is an enlarged view of this part of the graph.

As you can imagine, a delivery time of 45 days didn't go over very well with the customer.

As it turns out, there was a good reason for their shabby performance at that time : they are quite aggressive about trying to drum up new business for themselves, and had bitten off more than they could chew. In late 2017, KFC outlets in the UK were having so much trouble providing their various chicken meals to customers that some of those outlets actually had to close temporarily, due to a lack of the main ingredient, chicken.

Oh the scandal.

They'd been providing such meals for years (decades, presumably) without any problems, so what caused this mess?

In a word : DHL. They won the contract to supply KFC with chickens (presumably by undercutting the company that had been doing this for ages), and clearly they had some pretty severe teething problems.

Doubtless there was much gnashing of teeth and rending of garments within the DHL hierarchy, and perhaps so much attention was focused on the disaster in the UK that operations elsewhere suffered as well.

And remember, it never rains but it pours, so on top of the chicken saga there was also the breakdown of their sorting system in Singapore to add to the fun and games. For days, parcels were piling up in Singapore but not being processed.

But that was then, and I am pleased to say that ever since then their performance has been good, as you can see in the chart below, which shows delivery for parcels sent to the US from November 2018 to January 2019.

All parcels to the US were delivered within 20 days, even though it was the X-mas & New Year busy time.

The graphs below enable you to compare 2017's performance with that of 2018.

Based on the above information, we now confidently stand by our advertised delivery time of 2~3 weeks.
